Celebrating David Blackwell – Black History Month Workshop

As part of our Black History Month celebrations, a group of Year 6 children took part in an inspiring workshop celebrating the life and achievements of the famous mathematician David Blackwell.

The children learned about David Blackwell’s remarkable academic journey and his important discoveries in the fields of probability and statistics. They explored how his passion for mathematics, determination and commitment to learning helped him overcome barriers and achieve great success in his career.

The children also had the opportunity to create their own cartoons illustrating key moments from David Blackwell’s life, celebrating his achievements and the contribution he made to mathematics.

The workshop encouraged our pupils to think about their own aspirations and the importance of curiosity, determination and believing in what they can achieve. The children were particularly fascinated by university life and showed great interest in finding out how people progress through higher education and eventually earn a PhD.

It was wonderful to see the children asking thoughtful questions and imagining what their own academic journeys might look like in the future. The workshop was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate an influential Black mathematician while inspiring our pupils to recognise that with hard work, perseverance and a love of learning, there are many possibilities for their future.

On Monday, 27th April, Mr Stefan and Mrs Armbuster accompanied a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils to a Mini Tennis Competition at Barking Riverside School. It was a fun and exciting event from the very start, with the children arriving full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to compete. Throughout the day, they put their tennis skills to the test against a range of other schools, demonstrating excellent determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
