ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY

At Grafton Primary School we recognise that positive behaviour and good attendance are central to raising standards and pupil achievement. Our policy on attendance and punctuality underpins our school ethos to protect the rights of the child to receive an education.

For our children to gain the greatest benefit from their education it is vital that they attend regularly and that they arrive to school on time every day. Any absence or lateness affects the pattern of a child’s schooling and regular absence will seriously affect their learning. Any pupil’s absence or late arrival disrupts teaching routines and affects the learning of others in the same class.

As parents, you have a legal responsibility to ensure your child’s attendance at school. In line with government policy, our school does not authorise leave of absence for family holidays during term time and any requests will be automatically declined. If you take your child out of school for a holiday, you will be fined.

Attendance and punctuality records are scrutinised by the Leadership Team on a weekly basis, and by the Governing Body on a termly basis. Persistence lateness or poor attendance will result in a referral to the Local Authority’s legal and/or social services departments.

Reasons not to keep your child off school

* If you or another sibling is ill

* On their birthday

* To attend a non-urgent medical appointment or check-up (wherever possible, dentist and eyesight appointments should be made after school hours or at the weekend).

* To avoid going on a school trip (if you have any concerns about a school trip, please ask to make an appointment to see a member of the Leadership Team). In cases of illness, parents are asked to telephone the school on 020 3727 5171 and speak to a member of the office team or leave a message on the absence line. Please remember to give specific details of the illness because “poorly/unwell” is not sufficient.

If the absence continues for any length of time, please keep the school updated. A note confirming the reason for absence should be sent in with your child upon their return.

If you are unsure whether or not your child is too ill to come to school, please see the advice provided on the school website.

If you inform us that your child is ill either immediately before or after a school holiday, you will need to provide the school with medical evidence that confirms the illness. Without this, the absence will not be authorised. If your child’s absence is connected to a problem with travel or flights, we will need to see proof of the original flight and proof of the change. Again, without this evidence, the absence will not be authorised.

We trust that parents will not dishonestly claim that their child is ill or that there are exceptional circumstances which require them to take their children aboard during term. We need to role model good attendance, punctuality and integrity to our children in order for them to be successful later on in life.

Change of Policy for Late Collection

Please note that from 30th April onwards, parents who are late collecting their children from school on more than 2 occasions will be charged for the associated staffing costs. Minimum charge, £10.

In addition, if parents are late collecting a child from an after-school club on more than 2 occasions, the child’s place will re-allocated.

We expect that all parents will comply with school policy and support us in delivering a first-class education for our children.
