Changes to breakfast club and drop off arrangements

Starting Monday 16th April

Dear Parent/Carers,

Changes to breakfast club and drop off arrangements

As you will already know from the recent press coverage, schools are facing unprecedented times regarding their budgets. In fact, one in 5 schools across the country are in debt and are having to make extremely difficult decisions in terms of making cut backs.

The Governing Body of Grafton Primary School has reviewed the current budget position and has no option than to make some changes in order to save money. These changes are:

  • The free breakfast club for parents will be closed from Easter onwards.
  • The school will be expanding the number of places available in the Children’s Breakfast Club. From Monday 16th April, there will be two clubs.
    • Tiger Club – For KS1 children in the KS1 hall
    • Panda Club – For KS2 Children in the KS2 hall
    • The charge will be £2 per child and includes child care and breakfast.

  • We will of course be providing regular opportunities for parents to come into school. Details of future coffee mornings and our new parent workshop programme (including language courses) will be circulated next term.

Recently we have become aware that we need to improve the security of children at the start of the school day. It has come to our attention that some parents are dropping their children off early and are leaving them unattended in the playground. This is a serious child protection issue. Starting on Monday 16th April the gates at Stanhope Road will not be open until 8.30am when staff will be on duty in the playground. Only children attending breakfast club or other before school clubs should enter the school before 8.30am through the main school entrance on Becontree Avenue. If children are seen on site before 8.30am, they will be taken to Breakfast Club and parents will be charged the £2 fee. I am sure you can understand that we cannot have unsupervised children on site before school.

It is the school’s policy that only children in Year 5 and 6 should travel to school alone with written consent from the parent/carer. If your child does come to school with an older sibling or on their own, please ensure that they know that they cannot arrive before 8.30am.

If your child attends a before school club, the member of staff leading that club will ensure your child is met at an agreed point and will be taken care of until the start of the school day. For information about our ‘before school clubs’ please see the school website.

I am sure that everyone will agree that the safety of all our children is our absolute priority and the slight changes we are making will ensure that every child in our care will be safe at all times

Kind regards

Mr M Nicholson
