Mini Tennis Champions!

On Monday, 27th April, Mr Stefan and Mrs Armbuster accompanied a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils to a Mini Tennis Competition at Barking Riverside School.

It was a fun and exciting event from the very start, with the children arriving full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to compete. Throughout the day, they put their tennis skills to the test against a range of other schools, demonstrating excellent determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Their hard work and positive attitude truly paid off, as they performed brilliantly and secured an impressive first place overall —a fantastic achievement!

A special mention goes to Sami (Year 5 Packham) and Tiàre (Year 6 Hadid), who both won all of their matches. This is an outstanding accomplishment and reflects their focus and skill on the court.

Well done to all the pupils who took part. You represented Grafton Primary School with pride, and you should all be extremely proud of your efforts. ��

Lord Mayor of Barking & Dagenham Princess Bright visits Grafton Primary.

On 22 January 2026 , we were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Princess Bright to our school. The visit was a special and inspiring occasion for our pupils, particularly those in Years 5 and 6 , who took part in an engaging assembly led by the Lord Mayor.

During the assembly, pupils learned about the role of the Lord Mayor, the importance of civic responsibility, and how individuals can make a positive difference within their community. Our children listened attentively and asked thoughtful questions, demonstrating great curiosity and enthusiasm.

.The Lord Mayor also met with some of our Diversity and Rights Ambassadors , taking time to hear about their work in promoting equality, respect, and inclusion across the school. It was a valuable opportunity for our ambassadors to share their ideas and feel recognised for their commitment to our work as a Rights Respecting School and leadership.

We would like to thank the Lord Mayor for taking the time to visit us and for inspiring our pupils to be active, responsible, and compassionate citizens.

What is AI? Why should children learn AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important due to the rise in its systems and applications. The world is radically being changed by this technology as there is hardly anything in use that AI is not influencing. Our children today are growing up surrounded by applications of AI, from chatbots to virtual assistants, search engines, language translation services, autonomous vehicles etc.

This upsurge in AI-enabled technology points to the fact that not only is AI here to stay but it is also the way of the future. It is, therefore, imperative to equip your children with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning skills. This way, they can understand how the technology works and be prepared for a future that will largely depend on it.

There are several “AI for kids” websites that can aid your child’s learning of AI. In this newsletter, we have put together 10 of them, but first, let’s go through an overview of AI.

What Is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer, a computer-controlled robot, a machine or software to think like the human mind and perform tasks that generally require human intelligence. It involves creating algorithms that allow computers to learn from and make decisions, predictions or recommendations based on data rather than following only explicitly programmed instructions.

Tasks that AI is trained to perform include processing language, perception, learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Subsets of AI include Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.

Why Should Children Learn AI?

According to UNICEF , teaching AI to children is important because it is already a constant presence in their day-to-day activities. Children are frequently exposed to AI-powered technologies like the video games that they play and apps that they interact with.

Teaching children the principles of AI, its applications and its limitations at an early age is a great way to kickstart their critical thinking and prepare them to become intelligent consumers of technology.

More so, computer scientists have predicted that AI will be more prominent in the future than it is today. Thus, there is a high chance that AI will be connected to the future jobs of your children as many jobs will need to understand how AI works to solve difficult problems.

By learning about AI at an early age, kids can better understand how to apply this tool to improve the world.

At What Age Can Children Learn AI?

There is no hard and fast rule for the appropriate age to introduce AI to young people. Children are generally believed to be quick learners. Some of the websites highlighted below have AI classes for children as young as 4.

However, for easier understanding, you can begin to teach your child about AI from age 5 with consistent parental or educator support.

Several online platforms that teach children about AI start with who are 8 years old and above. Studies show that by that age, the abstract thinking in kids develops and they can grasp concepts more easily at this age.

At this point, let’s get started with our list of “AI for kids” websites.

10 Websites and Online Resources Where Children Can Easily Learn AI

#1. Kubrio

Kubrio is an alternative education website that offers remote learning experiences on diverse subjects and the latest technologies for children who are 8 to 18 years old. On this website, your children has the privilege of learning at his or her own pace and can team up with young learners who share similar interests.

The site has an AI Prompt Engineering Lab that can teach your child to use the best online AI tools for content creation, like developing captivating stories, interactive games, professional-quality movies, engaging podcasts, catchy songs, aesthetic designs, and software.

An interesting thing about Kubrio is that AI learning is gamified. This makes the educational experience more fun for kids. There are quests which your child can select from, complete his or her creative challenge, build a portfolio and earn points and badges.

#2. Create and Learn

This website helps to introduce young minds to the latest technological advancements. Through their online classes, children from primary to secondary can understand the intriguing world of robots, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Depending on your child’s class category, he or she can join AI classes such as AI Explorers, Create with ChatGPT, Hello Tech!, Free Intro to Python Coding, and AI Creators. The classes are live online, interactive, and practical. Apart from providing a broad overview of AI applications and technologies, your child also learns how AI can be applied to the latest technology, such as self-driving cars, face recognition, and games. As your child advances in learning, he or she will start building story projects and creating cool animation.

Create and Learn classes are unique because they all involve a machine learning activity where your child can program an AI game from start to finish. Also, the classes use an inquiry-based learning approach, so your child and other kids not only learn the “what”, but also the “how” and the “why.” This makes it easier to understand and your child can apply his or her learning in the future to real-world problems.

#3. Machine Learning for Kids

The next on this list of “AI for kids” websites is Machine Learning for Kids . This website introduces machine learning to children by providing them with hands-on experiences for training machine learning systems and building things with them.

This educational website provides an easy-to-use guided environment for training machine learning models to recognise text, numbers, images, or sounds. Your child is taught about machine learning by being allowed to train a computer to recognise text, pictures, numbers or sounds.

By helping children create projects and build games with the machine learning models that children train, Machine Learning for Kids builds on existing efforts to introduce and teach coding to children.

#4. Cognimates

Cognimates is an open-source AI education platform where children participate in innovative programming activities where they learn how to build games, program robots and train their own AI and machine-learning models. The platform originated as part of a research project at the MIT Media Lab to explore how children think about AI.

An exciting thing about cognimates is that some of the programming activities are moderated by embodied intelligent agents which in turn become learning companions to kids. The kids use a visual programming interface to control and customize an embodied intelligent agent. Through this, your child learns how to interact with a social robot and also program it, train it to remember and learn things over time, and have reflective conversations with their peers prompted by it.

The Cognimates platform was developed to make creating with AI easier and encourage kids to explore a topic that is generally viewed as difficult to learn or build with.

#5. Technovation

Among all the “AI for kids” websites listed in this article, Technovation is special, as it is a tech education programme strictly designed for girls. A global nonprofit runs the programme, and girls aged 8 to 18 years are equipped to become tech entrepreneurs, leaders, creators and problem-solvers in their communities by using AI.

Technovation uses a three-part learning model. The first is for a girl to identify problems in a community and develop a solution to the challenges. The next step is for her to build a team with fellow girls like herself, where they brainstorm and share the workload of bringing the solution to life. The final step in the learning model is to get the community involved by taking the Technovation solution to their schools, organizations and towns.

By participating in the Technovation Girls’ programme, your daughter gets to work in teams to code mobile applications and build tech products that address real-world problems that matter to her. She is also supported by volunteer mentors who will help keep her motivated and on track.

Young girls in this programme develop their collaboration, problem-solving and leadership skills.

#6. Zümi

Zümi is not a website but a kit for teaching children about AI. It is the first autonomous educational car kit that teaches children the concept and basics of Artificial Intelligence and self-driving cars in a fun and engaging way. To teach your kids how to use Zümi, you can visit Robolink . There are step-by-step tutorials on how your child can program the car in a small environment and make the car improve over time. The more the car learns, the better it gets.

There are several things that the Zümi educational car can do. It can learn from its environment and adapt to new obstacles by being programmed to do the following: calculate and use the optimal route on the road, identify obstacles on the road and act accordingly, and recognise the movements of your hand to follow the directions you will indicate with. It can also be trained to recognise faces and that of your friends or family.

While the Zümi educational robot is a basic approach to learning AI, it helps kids learn code and programming.

#7. AI World School

AI World School (AIWS) is an online self-directed learning platform that provides transformative AI and coding technology education to kids, from preschool to secondary levels. It has an interactive STEM curriculum and an innovative online educational experience. Your child can learn about AI anywhere and anytime, in a lively and fun manner through creative coding.

AIWS makes coding simple for your child with easy-to-use age-appropriate block-based programming tools that bring AI projects to Life. Their coding curriculum combines design thinking and a play-based approach that enables young learners to explore magical, imaginary worlds, harmoniously blending with real-life and digital experiences. Your child will get to engage with a variety of active online STEM challenges, thus developing creative, innovative, and critical thinking skills.

Aside from exposing kids to AI, one advantage AIWS has over other “AI for kids” websites is its exclusive worldwide AI community. Through this community, your child can exchange ideas and knowledge with fellow kids, build projects together, and share their real-world applications, animations, stories and games globally.

#8. AIClub

AIClub specialises in helping children learn, understand, and get excited about AI. They have expert facilitators who teach AI to kids from elementary to secondary school. The kids learn about AI and also build custom projects.

They use a unique approach to teaching AI known as the 4C’s of AI Literacy as highlighted below:

Concepts: kids learn how AIs work, what they can do and how to build and interact with AI, all described to be intuitive at the level of the kid’s education and age
Context: Kids learn how AIs in real life (like Alexa and Self Driving cars) work
Capability: Kids learn how to build their AIs, with as much or as little code as they are ready for.
Creativity: kids can bring their imagination to life and use AI to solve problems they care about through custom projects.

Their 4C approach helps kids build their first AI in their first class session with no coding or math prerequisites. As they progress, the kids learn deep and powerful skills.

AIClub also teaches Machine Learning for kids as well as other types of AI, like Natural Language Processing for understanding languages, and Deep Learning/Neural Networks for understanding images.

#9. Code.org

Code.org is a nonprofit education innovation committed to ensuring that children in schools have the opportunity to learn computer science as part of their core education from preschool to secondary levels.

Code.org increases diversity in computer science by reaching students of all backgrounds at their skill levels, in their schools, and in ways that inspire them to keep learning. Many students on Code.org are from student groups historically underrepresented in computer science.

#10. MIT Scratch

Scratch is a programming language and an online community for kids where your child can learn to program and share interactive media such as digital stories, games, and animation with children from all over the world. The online platform is designed, developed, and moderated by the Scratch Foundation, a nonprofit organisation.

As your child creates with Scratch, he or she learns to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch also promotes computational thinking and problem-solving skills in children.

The Scratch website is designed for young people ages 8 to 16; however, people of all ages can create and share with Scratch. There is also a simplified version of Scratch designed for young children between the ages of 5 to 7.

Scratch is always free and is available in more than 70 languages. Also, on the Scratch app, children are allowed to create Scratch projects without an internet connection. You can download the Scratch app from their website or the app store on your device.

Artificial Intelligence is the way of the future. Therefore, one of the best gifts you can give your children is ensuring that they know about this technology from an early age. You can explore any of the listed “AI for kids” websites to aid their learning.

Our Year 5 children led UNICEF Create Day 2025 at the Royal Opera House!

Congratulations to our amazing Year 5 children that led the UNICEF Create Day at the Royal Opera House on the 8th of July. The children took part in a number of rehearsal days in school with a team from the Royal Opera House to learn the songs, dance routines and to work with a specialist choreographer.

The final 10 minutes show our full final performance with opera singers and an orchestra. The children worked really hard and were amazing on our two days at the Royal Opera House. It was an excellent experience for all the children involved and we even got a backstage tour of the Royal Opera House.

Our KS2 school council members had a fantastic visit to Westminister!

On Monday 3rd of March 2025, our KS2 school council members visited Westminster. The children had a tour of the Houses of Parliament and ended with a Q & A session with MP Margaret Mullane. The children handed over their petition about parking and the dangerous driving on the roads that surround our school. They asked a range of questions and MP Margaret Mullane has agreed to come on a site visit to Grafton.

Congratulations to the Eco schools team!

Congratulations to the Eco schools team who worked extremely hard to get the Green Flag for Grafton Primary School. They have made the school a more environmentally friendly place through their litter picking in Valence Park, collecting food for Heath Community Hub and helping to introduce an Eco-code to be displayed throughout the school, amongst many other achievements. They also tirelessly helped out every Friday collecting the compost bins, making sure that fruit and vegetables are reused and composted on a weekly basis. Their hard work has been recognised on a national level and they should be extremely proud of their achievements.'

Year 6 visit to Ben Kinsella Trust workshop featured in BBC Politics London show on Sunday 9th June 2024

On Sunday 9th June 2024, three of our Year 6 pupils aired on BBC London Politics. You are able to watch the clip on BBC Iplayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m000dk0q/politics-london Their talk is about 13 minutes into the programme and relates to their recent learning on knife crime. Well done to the children on having the confidence to speak to journalists and also for their thoughtful comments.

The year 6 children visited the Ben Kinsella Trust workshop in Barking. This is a charity that tackles knife crime through education and campaigning. These workshops teach young people about the dangers of knife crime and empower them to make positive choices to stay safe.

Joe Wicks visit!

Joe Wicks visit

On Tuesday 21st of May, we were very lucky to be visited by the body coach and author Joe Wicks. Joe visited fifteen schools over five days across the UK as part of his popular School Tour. He aimed to meet and exercise with over 10,000 children.

Joe arrived at school at 10 am and quickly set up for the work he would do with the whole school. We had a stage and sound system on the KS2 playground so that he was able to work out with the whole school. The whole school were out on the KS2 playground and fortunately, managed to take part in a work out with Joe before the rain. After that, some children took part in a Q&A session with Joe about healthy lifestyles, fitness, his books and his motivation. Children in school and at home enjoyed doing his daily workouts through lockdown and he has inspired us to get fitter as well as to write a book! Joe was impressed with the children’s energy and enthusiasm. Joe donated a signed copy of his book ‘The Burpee Bears’ to our school library.

The whole school community had a great day and we are very grateful to Joe and to Miss Winter for arranging the event.

We are thrilled to announce the official opening of our brand-new School Community Library! This initiative aims to bring the joy of reading and learning to our pupils and the local community. We believe that a community library is a valuable resource to foster a love for literature. We encourage everyone to make the most of this wonderful addition to our school.

To ensure that our community library remains organised and enjoyable for all, we kindly request everyone to adhere to the following guidelines:

Dos:

Treat the library with respect and care, by keeping it tidy
Only donate books when there is room available.
Only donate books that are school age-appropriate
Where possible, try to do a like-for-like swap i.e if you take two books please try to donate two books in return
If you do spot a fault, please report it to a member of the office staff
Don'ts:
Leave the library hatch open when not in use(This will help to ensure the safety of all our pupils)
Do not lean, deface or damage the library in any way.
Do not leave books on or around the library hatch. If it is full, please save your donation for another day.

We sincerely hope that our School Community Library becomes a cherished addition for everyone. Let's work together to create an atmosphere of shared learning and enrichment for our pupils.

SCHOOLS OUT. GET ACTIVE - FREE SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE

Easter is almost here and what better way for the kids to spend their holiday than taking part in exciting activities and making new friends?

It can be tough for parents finding things to occupy little ones during the holidays, that’s why Barking and Dagenham council are hosting a variety of sports and physical activity camps.

Attending a camp is a great way for children to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, learn new skills and mingle with kids outside their immediate circle. It's a growing experience that will make them better people one day, with brighter memories of their school holidays.

Who the programme is for: young people and children who live or go to school in Barking & Dagenham?

Easter activities will be available from Monday 3 until Friday 14 April 2023 ( Excluding bank holidays)

Terms and conditions

There are a number of terms and conditions associated with School’s Out Get Active activities run by the Healthy Lifestyles Team. The key terms and conditions are:

Children and young people must either live or go to school within Barking and Dagenham.
Children and young people must be the age stated on the activity to attend; younger children may be asked to show evidence of their age.
Failure to attend pre-booked activities without good reason or notifying the provider or the School’s Out Get Active team, may lead to you being refused access to further activities.
A child can only be booked onto a maximum of two camps over the Easter holidays ( 1 per week).

Children and young people aged 5 to 16 who are eligible for free school meals and their families will be able to access free activities and a healthy lunch during the Easter holidays.

The Department for Education's (DfE) Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF) has provided funding for the scheme.

Local partners have developed an exciting programme of activities. They include schools, local voluntary and community organisations and childcare providers.

The activities will take place over the Easter holidays, Monday 3 until Friday 14 April 2023

How do I know if my child is eligible?

Your child will qualify if all these statements apply:

· your child is eligible for free school meals (FSM) or is a young carer or on a plan.

· you live in Barking & Dagenham.

· your child is aged between 5 and 16 years.

We will be holding parent/carer expectation meetings over the coming weeks. This will be an opportunity to hear from your child's year group leader regarding expectations for the year. All meetings will be recorded and the links will be shared with all parents/carers that are unable to attend. Meetings will be approximately 45 minutes. Please see the dates and times below.

Starting on the 6th June: Online meal selection

We are pleased to let you know that starting on the 6th June we will be introducing a more convenient way to book your child’s school meals using ParentPay. You will be able to easily choose, book and pay for meals online ensuring they receive the meal you have chosen for them each day.

Pre-order meals online

Meals can be ordered in advance in your ParentPay account. To help you choose, you will be able to see pictures of the meals available, their nutritional content and any allergens in one place. This allows you to have more visibility over what your children are eating in school and ensures your child will receive the meal they selected from the kitchen - even if they are the last class to have their lunch.

Allergies, religious requirements and special diets

You can update the system with any allergens and special dietary requirements to ensure your children are eating appropriate and safe meals. ParentPay will automatically block any meal choices that contain approved allergens for each child. The system can also manage religious and special dietary choices, enabling you to feel confident that special dietary requirements are observed.

A convenient and flexible system

Meal orders can be quickly amended or cancelled online, putting you in control and saving you time on phone calls to school. You can view and make bookings on any device, phone, tablet or computer by logging into ParentPay - at times that are convenient to you.

Free School Meals support

The meal selection system automatically supports Free School Meal and Universal Infant Free School Meal children, allowing you to choose meals safe in the knowledge no payment will be required.

We shall be sending you further details nearer the time. 86% of you have already activated your accounts for trips, clubs or school meals. You will need access to your ParentPay account to be able to order your meals.

Grafton Primary School has chosen to be part of an exciting nationwide challenge to encourage more children and their families to walk or cycle to school.

WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge is created by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, to help as many children as possible benefit from walking to school.

With WOW, children report how they get to school every day and if they walk, cycle or scoot twice a week for a month , they get rewarded with a badge. Children love the badges and compete to add to their collections!

Walking to school helps children feel happier and healthier and they arrive refreshed, fit and ready to learn. More families walking means fewer cars on the road, helping to reduce congestion and pollution.

Grafton Primary will start their new WOW programme on Tuesday 1st February so get ready to join in!

What if you can’t walk to school?

You can Park and Stride or hop off public transport at least ten minutes away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Class teachers will explain this to your children.

Did you know? The WOW badges are made using recycled yoghurt pots destined for landfills. Thousands of schools are already part of WOW across the UK so we are delighted you are joining us.

Updated Covid-19 guidance - January 2022

January 2022 - Updated Covid-19 Guidance- 17th January 2022

In order to facilitate the safe opening of the school for all our children, staff and the whole school community please read the updated Covid-19 guidance below.

All parents/carers and visitors are now required to wear face masks (unless exempt) when entering the school playground, before and after school, and to enter the school office area.
Late collection of children will now be from the red doors in the KS1/Infant hall.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN TO SCHOOL IF:

They are showing coronavirus symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19, inform the school immediately and we will advise regarding isolation and sibling testing.
They have tested positive on lateral flow test (home test kit), arrange a PCR test at a test centre (if your child has symptoms) and inform the school immediately.

Inform the school if a member of your household has tested positive.

Changes to the self-isolation period for those who test positive for COVID-19

From Monday 17 January, people who are self-isolating with COVID-19 will have the option to reduce their isolation period after 5 full days if they test negative with a lateral flow device (LFD/home test) test on both day 5 and da y 6 and they do not have a temperature. For example, if they test negative on the morning of day 5 and the morning of day 6, they can return to their education or childcare setting immediately on day 6. These tests must be emailed to the school on covid19@grafton.bardaglea.org.uk

The first test must be taken no earlier than day 5 of the self-isolation period, and the second must be taken the following day. All test results should be reported to NHS Test and Trace . and the school on covid19@grafton.bardaglea.org.uk

If the result of either of their tests is positive, they should continue to self-isolate until they get negative results from two LFD tests on consecutive days or until they have completed 10 full days of self-isolation, whichever is earliest.

Anyone who is unable to take LFD tests or anyone who continues to have a temperature will need to complete the full 10 day period of self-isolation.

Temporary suspension of confirmatory PCR tests in education and childcare settings

Confirmatory PCR testing following a positive result on a lateral flow device (LFD) will be temporarily suspended from, Tuesday 11 January. This means that for all education and childcare settings, staff and students who have tested (either at home or through ATS) and reported a positive LFD result will no longer be advised to get a confirmatory PCR test. If your child tests positive on a lateral flow test, you must email the test result to the school at covid19@grafton.bardaglea.org.uk

This change is informed by public health advice. With high COVID-19 rates, the risk of a positive LFD result being false is very small. We, therefore, don’t need to ask people to do a confirmatory PCR unless they:

have symptoms (a new continuous cough, high temperature, loss of taste or smell) (in which case they need to follow the stay at home guidance, self-isolate and order a PCR test)

Parents/Carers, please be vigilant, if you receive a Weduc message from the school informing you of a positive case of Covid-19 in your child's class we may ask you to complete a PCR test at a test centre, if your child has other symptoms such as a sore throat, headache, tummy bug.

Children are strongly encouraged to test twice weekly at home and to report all results to NHS Test and Trace and to their setting. Anyone with a positive LFD test result should self-isolate and follow self-isolation guidance.

Information on the new arrangements can be found in the stay at home: guidance for households with possible or confirmed COVID-19 infection .

Returning From Overseas Travel

Children aged 5 to 17 have to follow the testing and quarantine rules for people who qualify as fully vaccinated on arrival in England.

This means that they have to take a COVID-19 test after they arrive in England – before the end of day 2 at the latest. This can be a lateral flow test or a PCR test. Children must not return to school until after they have received a negative test result and this has been emailed to the school at covid19@grafton.bardaglea.org.uk
